Recreational marijuana use is legal in both Colorado and Washington, and now 23 states have passed legislation for some form of medical use. Despite the rapid changes taking place state-by-state, there is still no clear path on how marijuana laws will change at the federal level. This still leaves 27 states time to pass either recreational use or medicinal marijuana laws. Even though the majority of Americans approve medical marijuana use, critics remain opposed, making it more difficult for some states to pass legislation. Which states will be next to legalize?

According to the San Diego Free Press, a federal health official recently admitted that the prohibition against medical marijuana has harmed the ability to conduct effective research into the therapeutic potential of cannabis. Unfortunately, this has in turn made it more difficult for advocates of medical marijuana to get federal laws changed to make medical marijuana legal.

The use of medical marijuana has been expanding nationwide as more states move towards legalization. Now, marijuana may be available more easily, not only because it is legal in more places but because it could be delivered directly to your door. According to USA Today, two University of Washington students have developed an app called “Canary” that will allow marijuana patients to order pot using their smart phones and have it brought to them. Canary is going to make its debut to medical marijuana patients in Seattle but there are reportedly plans to expand the market to Denver and to California. mobile-phone-2-1225931-m.jpg

The stigma that was once attached to pot smoking is disappearing as marijuana is legalized. This shift signals an overall change in the way that society views the drug and those who smoke, either for medicinal purposes or recreational use. It also means that employment policies are changing to accommodate a talented pool of pot smokers. According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, the FBI is considering changing its once stringent no-tolerance policy so that it can hire those who smoke marijuana.

The Colorado legislature has approved a bill that will allow marijuana businesses to use regulated banking co-ops. Despite challenges from the Colorado Bankers Association, the bill is expected to be signed by Governor John Hickenlooper.

Sacramento County supervisors are continuing their efforts to rein in the growing cannabis industry in California. This time, lawmakers are coming after pot farms. As Reuters reports, they are justifying their actions by indicating that a “huge number of complaints were received last year from residents with regard to outdoor marijuana cultivation.” hemp-969266-m.jpg

The fact that lawmakers also considered banning indoor cultivation of marijuana, however, reveals that their concerns may not actually be protecting public safety but trying to find ways to restrict the rights of individuals who are part of the medical marijuana industry in California.
