According to a recent news article from AllGov California, a 52-year-old former marijuana dealer is currently unemployed and lives in a trailer on the property of his parents’ home in the state of New Mexico. As he waits, California politicians are hard at work trying to keep him out of prison.

gavel41.jpgIn 2008, the United States Attorney’s Office prosecuted defendant for violating federal drug laws, and he was convicted. His conviction occurred approximately two years after he had opened a medical marijuana dispensary in California. City officials and members of the chamber of commerce had attended his grand opening.

Medical marijuana is legal in California as well as a little less than half of the states in the country, depending on how one interprets the overall effects of their various laws and ordinances, some of which are rather ambiguous.

laweducation.jpgThere is no question among a majority of medical experts cannabis can have a very beneficial effect on many patients who are suffering from a wide variety of physical ailments and mental health issues.

There are patients from all walks of life with vastly different health problems who can be good candidates for medical marijuana, and a statistically significant portion of these prospective medical cannabis patients are military veterans. In many cases, it was the physical and psychological trauma suffered on the battlefields of Iraq, Afghanistan and Vietnam, which caused their respective needs for medical cannabis as a treatment option.

While there has been much progress made in the legalization of medical marijuana and the legalization or decriminalization of marijuana in general, much of what has been accomplished still seems like half-measures. In some jurisdictions, like Washington, DC, marijuana in quantities of less than two ounces is legal to buy and possess. It is legal to smoke, so long as it is within the confines of a private residence, and it is legal to give to someone else, as long as you receive nothing of value in return. However, it is still illegal to sell any quantity of marijuana. If that isn’t a major boon to the black market seller of marijuana, it is hard to imagine what is.

weedonground.jpgIn California, it is legal to purchase medical marijuana if you have a doctor’s recommendation that you are a patient who will benefit from the medicine, but it is up to the counties and cities across our state to determine when and where it can be sold. If you live in a county in which it is not legal to operate a dispensary, and you have a valid letter from a doctor, you must travel to a county or city in which it is legal to operate a medical marijuana dispensary. As one can imagine, this is no easy task for some very sick people who cannot even leave their own homes.

There is no question more people across the country, specifically in California, have grown increasingly supportive of allowing the use of medical marijuana and are moving toward support for complete legalization. County officials are faced with the difficult task of making regulations that respond to the changing landscape of marijuana regulations while not upsetting many who still cling to outdated fears and oppose the use of medical marijuana.

If you have ever taken the time to flip through all the channels available on your cable package, you have probably seen many television personalities offering advice in business, investments, cooking, gardening, home buying and just about everything else. According to a recent feature from LA Weekly, a woman known as the “Martha Stewart of Marijuana” is now offering advice for women looking to get involved in the medical marijuana industry.

brownies-964880-m.jpgCheryl Shuman is the real name of the marijuana business expert who has been the president of the Beverly Hills Cannabis Club for the past two decades. She is helping women to take advantage of what she is calling the “pot-com boom” in the marijuana cultivation industry with obvious reference to the dot.com boom of the late 1990s.

Earlier this year, she founded a networking group called “Women Grow,” where she counsels women looking to join the burgeoning industry. She highlights opportunities that others might overlook, such as “weed photography” and edible baked cannabis products.

If you are familiar with the medical marijuana industry in California, you know some aspects of the industry and some local areas basically have a hands-off approach, as if we are dealing with a Wild West approach to regulation. On the other hand, some trying to get involved in the medical marijuana industry face draconian regulations and prohibitions and can’t seem to do anything without authorities threatening to shut them down or arrest them, despite their best efforts to follow the law.

dutchweed.jpgAccording to a recent article from The LA Times, our state legislature is considering plans to regulate medical cannabis dispensaries and marijuana grow operations. The California state legislature is now examining competing plans on how to regulate the medical marijuana industry.

While medical marijuana and medical cannabis products have greatly eased the pain and suffering of many medical marijuana patients in Los Angeles and across Southern California, one of the major problems is those in need of medicine are often too sick to go to their medical cannabis dispensary to pick up their medication.

turntable-5-952176-m.jpgOne way the legislature has helped to address this serious issue is by allowing medical marijuana patients to have a designated caregiver who is allowed to pick up their medical cannabis for them. While this offers help for those who can afford a caregiver, or who are fortunate to have someone willing to help them for free, such as a family member, there is a large percentage of medial marijuana patients who find it very difficult to get their medicinal products due to their physical limitations.

A somewhat new trend in the medical cannabis industry aimed at addressing this problem involves the creation and operation of medial marijuana home delivery services. According to a recent report from LA Weekly, the rapper Snoop Dogg intends to bring his medical cannabis delivery service to Los Angeles to serve patients in need.

One of the most common arguments opponents of medical marijuana legalization and marijuana legalization in general make is that legalizing marijuana and cannabis products will lead to an increase in crime. Despite significant credible evidence to the contrary, the old argument that marijuana leads to crime is still a powerful tool in the arsenal of those against rights of medical marijuana patients. For this reason, any crime in any way related to a medical cannabis dispensary makes big news.

handcuffs4.jpgAccording to a recent story The Sun, prosecutors in San Bernardino have charged an LA man in connection with the alleged shooting of a security guard at a dispensary last February. Authorities say 21-year-old defendant shot and killed a 25-year-old security guard during a robbery. Authorities also allege this particular medical marijuana dispensary was being illegally operated at the time of the alleged murder.

Witnesses say two gunmen entered the dispensary at a local strip mall and forced their way to the rear of the business where medical cannabis products were stored. While officials are not sure exactly what transpired, they believe victim shot back at alleged offenders and may have wounded one of them, based upon the amount of suspect’s blood found at the crime scene.

Medical marijuana has been scientifically proven to have a lot of benefits to patients for a variety of medical conditions, ranging from psychological conditions to advanced stages of cancer. Interestingly, it is perfectly legal to get a prescription for powerful narcotics, and walk into any pharmacy and walk out with a bottle of OxyContin or Vicodin, but, in most places in the United States, it is illegal to possess even a small quantity of marijuana.

In a recent article from News Review, one editor takes a look at medical cannabis for pain control. He uses his personal experience as a 31-year-old trying to play basketball. He has pain from his swelling feet, shin splints, and knee pain. He has access to narcotic painkillers prescribed to treat his knee pain but instead decides to use medical cannabis to treat his pain.

While much of the news coverage dealing with the medical cannabis industry in Southern California deals with regulation and enforcement, a recent article from News Review offers advice on the proper way to act when visiting a medical marijuana dispensary.

The first thing you need to know is you must have a letter of recommendation from your doctor, stating medical cannabis would treat your health condition, and your California driver’s license or state issued non-driver ID card. There will probably be a security guard who asks to see and verify your letter and ID before you are permitted to enter the establishment. It should be noted, most of these security guards are especially friendly to medical marijuana patients, so this is not exactly like an ID check at a local bar.

Next, you will be required to become of a member of the club, which will require you to fill out an application requesting personal and biographical information. You will also be presented with a copy of club policies and guidelines to review. Once you have completed all necessary paperwork, you will be allowed to actually enter the club. In the past, there were apparently additional warnings presented to patients, but most dispensaries have become less formal over the past 10 years.
